SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS: Grand Final 2020
If ever there was going to be a year that the Grand Final was decided after the final hooter had sounded courtesy of a drop goal attempt that hit the post, bounced back over the crossbar and into the arms of an onrushing chaser, it would be 2020!
Fans and novices alike were gripped by an enthralling final, with the most incredible of endings. We look back at how social media reacted to Super League's big night.
Pre Match
Rob Burrow lent his voice to the Sky Sports' opening promo. It was an emotional start to the evening. In case you didn't see it, here it is:

First Half
Time for the action to begin!
Some build up this! Gutted there’s no fans. KCOM looking π₯π₯ good luck to @WiganWarriorsRL & @Saints1890 #GrandFinal
— Danny Cass (@DannyCass_) November 27, 2020
The first half saw St Helens dominate territory, although Wigan coming closest to the game's first try. But it was the Saints who led, with a Lachlan Coote penalty coming in the final kick of the half.
If you see a rugby league game with no tries at half-time you normally think it’s a shit game.
— George (@georgeyboy) November 27, 2020
In truth it’s often the opposite - utterly ferocious.
Fantastic to watch.
And the fact that it feels like a #GrandFinal on a weird, empty night in Hull is testament to both teams π
Watching this rugby and these lads are quite simply hard as nails! Seriously powerful and talented athletes who can’t half shift!! I’m not very clued up on this sport but I do understand enough to know that it’s fierce and some game! π₯ #SuperLeagueGrandFinal
— Tony Bellew (@TonyBellew) November 27, 2020
BreakthroughDespite the scoreline it’s been a cracking first half as the quality and intensity is still there and both defences have been class. #SLWigStH #GrandFinal

Get in there @JakeBibby π⚪️ my goodness I’m gonna have heart attack here! Come on boys, push on!!
— Natalie Watson (@NaterlieeLou) November 27, 2020
No fans here, but Wigan's squad members made almost enough noise to make up for it in the main stand as Jake Bibby broke the try scoring deadlock
— Gareth Walker (@garethwalker) November 27, 2020
That Finish
Lachlan Coote drew the game level with 8 minutes to go and a Zak Hardaker missed penalty gave St Helens one last shot. They took it through Jack Welsby.
Wigan's official Twitter account offered a descriptive view:
80' Try Saints. Jack Welsby scores.
— Wigan Warriors π⚪️ (@WiganWarriorsRL) November 27, 2020
St Helens...well, a more emotive perspective!

Reaction
The St Helens players, staff and fans went wild. So did Twitter.
I honestly don’t think you will see a better sporting contest all year than that @Saints1890 @WiganWarriorsRL #grandfinal tonight. The finish was breathtaking. Rugby League at its best is sport at its best
— ALASTAIR CAMPBELL (@campbellclaret) November 27, 2020
Rob Burrow nailed it in the pre match - said he listened to the 'game of inches' speech before big games.
— GTT (@Ad_Iudicium_) November 27, 2020
Can hardly have a better example
Imagine.
— Rugby League World Cup 2021 (@RLWC2021) November 27, 2020
Imagine being a 19 year old scoring the winning try in a @SuperLeague #GrandFinal with the last touch of the game.
Imagine being @Saints1890’s Jack Welsby.
Imagine that.
And that ladies and gentleman was Rugby π League at its best! @SuperLeague #GrandFinal

People who aren’t watching Rugby League are depriving themselves of emotions that are quite difficult to describe. I was only a casual fan until Salford v Hull KR in 2016. That game hooked me. I thought I’d never see an ending like it...but that one tonight !π€― #GrandFinal
— Steven North (@steviecnorth) November 27, 2020
Don't tell me that's not the best sport in the world.
— TruthTalkingMaverick (@TruthTalkingMav) November 27, 2020

I am still ringing family & friends in delitious shock. What a clash, what a phenomenal display of @SuperLeague at its greatest.
