#SocialMediaReacts - Wigan vs Warrington
The opening game of Super League between Wigan and Warrington had it all. A quiet, tepid start to the season this was not!
And, as always, the rugby league community on Twitter had its forthright say on the proceedings. Here is the first blog which looks at the social media reaction to the opener!
13 Minutes - Wigan 0-8 Warrington - Murdoch-Masila try
The game's first try came from Ben Murdoch-Masila as he trampled over George Burgess to crash in under the posts...
...and the fans loved it!George Burgess' Super League career didn't get off to the best of starts— FOX LEAGUE (@FOXNRL) January 30, 2020

George Burgess hip injury? Probs down to the massive tyre he’s carrying round it— Matthew Dean (@MattyDean97) January 30, 2020
It wasn't just Big Ben either who took advantage!George Burgess looks like someone who’s eaten George Burgess....so someone’s just said. Wasn’t me. Definitely not me. #SuperLeague #SLWigWar— martyn pool (@martynpool) January 30, 2020
Some looked to offer mitigation:Blake Austin has just ploughed over the top of George Burgess. Yes, you read that right.— Matthew Shaw (@M_Shaw1) January 30, 2020
But Kris Voakes probably had the most sensible advice!George Burgess off. Two missed tackles in first stint. Worth remembering he's only played two games since last June... didn't even figure in any of Wigan's friendlies.— Phil Wilkinson (@PWilkinsonWIG) January 30, 2020
If Ben Murdoch-Masila runs at you, you're probably best just leaving him to it. #SLWigWar— Kris Voakes (@krisvoakes) January 30, 2020
23 Minutes - Wigan 12-8 Warrington - Penalty Try / Hill Red Card
Before the match, Sky Sports' Phil Clarke commented that Chris Hill was one the world's best players...these comments didn't come at the best time, as many pointed out!
Phil Clarke said pre-match that Chris Hill has been one of the best players in the world over the past few years. Not today (or indeed, any day).— James Gordon (@jdgsport) January 30, 2020
Although in Clarke's defence, he has made the same point for years...and received the same criticism for it!"Chris Hill has been one of the Worlds best players" Phil Clarke is back and raring to go for 2020 ladies and gents π Jesus wept #SuperLeague— Sam Shepherd (@ferribyshep) January 30, 2020
And of course, Chris Hill came in for some rightful criticism for the reckless tackle.Rugby league has been back on tv for 7 minutes and Phil Clarke has just said Chris Hill is the best player in the world— Ben Francis (@Ben_Francis6) February 1, 2018
Shocking challenge from Chris Hill. Rightly sent off. RL is trying to eradicate contact with the head from the game. Red cards and long bans will help. Most importantly let’s hope Sam Powell is OK.— Rod Studd (@Rod_Studd) January 30, 2020
— Chris Holme (@chrisholme1983) January 30, 2020
Some however were delighted with the dismissal:I genuinely don’t think it was intentional by Chris Hill but entirely the right call by the ref and setting the correct tone, a players health should be taken seriously! Hoping Powell is alright ππΌ Slow plays always look bad π #SLWigWar— Rachel Nicholson (@Rachelln83) January 30, 2020

Half Time - Wigan 12-10 Warrington
Half time gave an opportunity to pause for breath and to reflect on an incident-packed 40 minutes
57 Minutes - Wigan 12-10 Warrington - Joe Burgess charge down- Burgess flattened— Tryline Blog (@TrylineBlog) January 30, 2020
- An outrageous dummy
- Penalty try
- Red card
- Gouging accusation
- 3 tries
- 3 conversions
- 2 penalty kicks
- 40 minutes
Quiet start to the Super League season then π³#SLWigWar pic.twitter.com/EHSkWGpIw6
The second half got off to a slower start but there was a contentious moment in the 57th minute when Joe Burgess was ruled to have charged down a Warrington kick, when many thought it was a knock on:
Watching the Wire match back as I usually do, how Chris Kendall judged that knock on to be a charge down is beyond me. Absolute shocker of a call— Bri (@briancorley95) January 31, 2020
However if you read the charge down law, as the kick was rising, Kendall got the call spot on. Who would be a ref?Chris Kendall should be dropped from super league. Never seen a worse display of refereeing, for both sides. How he missed that Budgie knock on I’ll never know— Wigan Warriors Fans (@WiganFans_RL) January 30, 2020
Drilled or a chip kick. The ball was on its way up so by the law it’s a charge down— Ian Smith (@Iansmith2468) January 30, 2020
58 Minutes - Wigan 12-10 Warrington - Matty Ashton try saverAnd what a tough game to ref RL is . Chris Kendall needed all the help he could get last night and I thought he made a fair go of it. Those who criticise every week ought to try reffing games of superleague pace.— Martin Douglas (@craventen0five) January 31, 2020
Wigan then went straight up the other end and were denied by a brilliant tackle by the debutant Matty Ashton, who came in for some deserved praise
And now Matty Ashton saves a try in an impressive Super League debut.— Martyn Sadler (@MartynSadler) January 30, 2020

62 - 64 minutes - Wigan 16-10 Warrington - French no try, Cooper sin bin, Marshall match-winnerTell you what, we’ve found a gem in Matty Ashton if he carries on— Matty. (@MattyKirkham_) January 31, 2020
It's fair to say that the game sprung back to life between the 57th and 65th minutes. None more so than in this period, Bevan French was denied a penalty try, Mike Cooper was sin-binned and Wigan took advantage of facing 11 men, with Liam Marshall scoring the winning try.
64' SIN BIN!French chases his own kick into the in-goal area but the full-back is held back by Mike Cooper and is shown a yellow card. Wigan get the penalty...— Wigan Warriors π⚪️ (@WiganWarriorsRL) January 30, 2020
Beautiful pass by French.— John Davidson (@johnnyddavidson) January 30, 2020
But Liam Marshall’s beard... π
Meanwhile some couldn't resist a chuckle at the natural innuendo of a rugby league game!Against 11, no surprise Wigan put width on the ball - but great long pass from Bevan French to send Liam Marshall over. 16-10ktc.— Phil Wilkinson (@PWilkinsonWIG) January 30, 2020

Ref keeps saying "Willie out" too π€£π€£#SlWigWar
Wigan could never quite kill the game off, and Warrington hung on until the end but couldn't get the equaliser. As fans left the stadium and the television coverage ended, fans and pundits took the moment to reflect:
Some season opener doubt. Loads of talking points. George Burgess' tough debut, impressive performances from Bevan French and Matty Ashton, Chris Hill's red card, a potential gouging case. Warrington look sharp despite defeat, Wigan do what Wigan do and get the job done.— Matthew Shaw (@M_Shaw1) January 30, 2020
πWhat an opening game!— Rugby League Scene (@TheRLScene) January 30, 2020
- Burgess’ debut halted
- Hill sees red
- Cooper receives yellow
- Powell’s injury
- Matty Ashton stepped up to the plate
- Bevan French shines for Wigan
- Sean O’Loughlin accused of eye-gouging.
See you tomorrow @SuperLeague, it’s good to be back!
Very spirited performance, plenty to be pleased with. Discipline, poor calls, defensive lapses and stupid decisions in attack have cost us. Think it went better than most of us would’ve expected though.— You’ve Got a Loose Wire (@ALooseWire) January 30, 2020
The collisions. The controversy. Wigan's ability to find a way. Warrington's ill discipline. The tension. The drama. The boys. Are back!— Tryline Blog (@TrylineBlog) January 30, 2020

Meanwhile, we took the opportunity to remind our Twitter followers of Karl Fitzpatrick's pre-match comments!
